The world needs clean drinking water. It’s a human issue. We need clean water because our body’s are made mostly of water. It’s a problem that often gets pushed away from our consciousness. Access to clean water is a developed and developing country problem. Look at Hurricane Katrina if you need proof that water is a highly valued commodity when there is scarcity. Let’s see what the situation is and what’s being done.

I’ve been reading and stewing over the idea Mark Granovetter presented over 40 years ago. The idea/argument is that weak social ties play a more important role in building stronger social capital than your densely knit group of friends and family. So let’s dive in!

This post isn’t about Radiohead, however it was inspired by the title of this track, “Everything in it’s right place,” and it’s available for your listening pleasure.

Everything is constantly changing, and human behavior is absolutely no exception. A recent article by Reuters outlines the growth in niche social networks even as the massive Facebook network continues to grow. As the novelty of Facebook fades and the distraction of trying to be everything to everyone loses value for networkers, we will see more and more people gravitating towards joining a network that means something to them. Ning’s overall premise is after all,  to be able to easily join many niche social networks.

Nice ass donkey

An old joke about efficiency: An olive oil vendor returns from the marketplace and complains to a friend, “I can’t make money selling olive oil! I feed the donkey that carries my oil to the market, most of my profit is gone.” His friend suggests he feed the donkey a little less. Six weeks later they meet again at the marketplace. The oil seller is in poor shape, with neither money or donkey. When his friend asks what happened, the vendor replies, “Well, I did as you said. I fed him even less, and I did even better. But just at the point where I was becoming really successful, he died!”

-William McDonough & Michael Braungart
excerpt from Cradle to Cradle

This little joke/ antic illustrates a concept known in Ecological Economics as the “Maximum Sustainable Yield, often referred to in managing fisheries,” and is at the core of sustainable production.

It’s quite clear that despite Twitters simplicity, what are you doing in 140 characters, the technology is actually quite complicated. With a recent report claiming a 40% retention rate, surely there is more to it then sending and receiving messages. So why are people using it and why aren’t they? I believe it is because people have a difficult time finding the value for each unique situation they may be in. Here is the value I see people finding:

  1. Promotion
  2. News
  3. Exploration
  4. Market research
  5. Accessibility to people
  6. Journaling
  7. Entertainment
  8. Finding a voice

In order for someone to find the utility of Twitter they need to either observe value first hand, or they need to hear a story of success from another, or they need to play with it and find it for themselves. The strongest of those is finding value first hand, and that can take time. If you stick with the service long enough to battle the random auto-follows and spam, if you hold out belief long enough that someone is actually listening, if you get that it is a river and you can’t read everything and that’s okay, if you learn early enough that the best way to use Twitter is through a Twitter client (Tweetie, Seismic, Twirl, Bit.ly, etc.), and if you hold faith that the end result will be positive, then you will find the value for yourself.

Overall, Twitter seems to take some time to understand, and it’s an investment. The interface is changing and applications are being developed that make it not only easier to understand, and show utility right away, and as the dust settles and more early majority start using it it will be easier to connect value to user in a faster more manageable way.

I’ll have more on this subject highlighting some of these apps in the future.

“In recent decades college education-like the computer-has gone from being a narrow-market good to a mass-market good. It can no longer be considered a luxury. This means that the distribution channels for college guidance needs to be redesigned. That is a challenge College Summit has taken up.”

The following is an excerpt from a class project, from back when I was studying Ecological Economics. I can’t remember if I wrote this or if it was a classmate, but it was relevant and share worthy.

I had the pleasure to help put together a social network for the Global Earthdance Community, a global event that happens in over 200 places around the world, that features a simultaneous “Prayer for Peace.” The website offers a Peace Clock” that signifies a global meditation time and prayer for peace.

Earthsite has posted some of our presentations online at Slideshare. Most of them were developed for speaking arrangements by our company’s CEO, Joey Shepp, and were redesigned for reading on the web. Here are a few of our highest viewed presentations.

I started experimenting with blogging back in 2006 with a blog called, “myGreenJourney.” The blog really was just was a way for me to practice blogging, but also to share some of the things I was learning as a student in sustainable enterprise. I have more or less left that blog and am now here.

I look forward to using this blog to create somewhat of an archive of stories, resources, and ideas that are important to me and that I think are worthy of sharing. I would really like to see conversations grow in my comments, so even if you have something short to say, please feel free to share.

A little about me

My name is Ryan, and I am a recent graduate of the GreenMBA program at Dominican University of California. The MBA was a unique learning experience that focus on building sustainable enterprises with a focus on entrepreneurship, intrapreneurship, and consulting. My undergraduate degree is in sociology and now I am blending the two areas of focus as a social media manager for a company called Earthsite, also started by graduates from the MBA program.

I work on a lot of different projects, and I absolutely love what I do!

Enjoy!
